Associations Company Profile: National organisation representing
architects in Singapore; aims: to promote practice of
architecture, represent views and promote interests of
architects, preserve professional integrity, advance study
and research, award merit
The
architectural professional began to organized
themselves in 1923 with the formation of the
Singapore Society of Architects. In 1931, it was
renamed the “Institute of Architects Malaya (IAM)”.
IAM was dissolved in 1958 with the formation of the
Society of Malayan Architects (SAM).
This was the parent body of the Singapore Institute
of Architects (SIA). SIA was established in 1961
with the dissolution of the SAM with the objective
to promote architectural profession and the built
environment in Singapore. SIA was subsequently
registered on 5 March 1963 with the Registrar of
Society and notified in Gazatte No 27 on 15 March
1963.
Management of SIA
The management of the affairs of the Institute is
the responsibility of an elected Council, comprising
21 members, one of whom is appointed by the Board of
Architects, Singapore, as an ex-officio member.
There are 6 office bearers, who are responsible
collectively for the administration and financial
matters of the Institute.
Membership Structure
There are 10 categories of membership, namely:
Honorary Fellow Member, Fellow (Life) Member, Fellow
Member, Fellow (Retired) Member, Corporate Member,
Corporate (Retired) Member, Associate Member, Member
(Overseas), Student Member and Allied Member
The current membership strength is 1418.
Membership of International Organisations
The Institutes is a member of the International
Union of Architects (UIA), the Architects Regional
Council Asia (ARCASIA), the Commonwealth Association
of Architects (CAA) and the ASEAN Association of
Planning (AAPH). The Institute endeavors to
participate in relevant programmes of these
Institutes.
