Huay Kuan's (SHHK) main objects throughout its one and a
half century of existence are the promotion of education,
social welfare and preservation of Chinese language and
culture. It established Tao Nan School in 1906
Ai Tong
School in 1912, Chongfu School in 1915, Nan Chiau
High School and Nan Chiau Primary School in 1947 and
Kong Hwa School in 1953. In 1955, it donated a plot
of land as the campus for Nanyang University.
Besides funding and managing these six schools, SHHK
also provides a range of scholarship, bursary and
overseas training awards for its teaching staff and
pupils. In terms of social welfare, the SHHK
Tertiary Scholarship and SHHK Art and Cultural
Scholarship are given to deserving candidates
regardless of their race, religion and dialect
group. SHHK makes generous donations to other
charitable foundations and institutions which,
include Chinese Development Assistance Council,
Chinese Heritage Centre, The Courage Fund, Lee Kuan
Yew Scholarship Fund, Sun Yet Sen Nanyang Memorial
Hall, Mendaki Education Trust Fund, Ong Teng Cheong
Education Trust Fund, NUS Biological Research Fund,

In terms of preserving and promoting Chinese
language and culture, SHHK organises the Annual SHHK
Literary Awards, which encompasses Primary Schools
Essay Writing Competition, National Secondary
Schools Creative Writing Competition and the
Singapore Tertiary Chinese Literary Awards. This
annual event aims at raising the standard of Chinese
writing skills among our students at primary,
secondary and tertiary levels. SHHK affiliated
schools and its Art and Culture Troupe are actively
involved in promoting the four Chinese traditional
arts, ie: qin, qi, shu, hua, appreciation of Chinese
literature and history and mass participation of
wushu in their campuses.
In order to promote better interaction between
secondary school students of Singapore and China,
SHHK sponsors a Singapore-PRC Students Exchange
Programme. From 2003, SHHK also offers scholarship
to outstanding students from Malaysia to study in
Singapore.
SHHK has two wholly-owned subsidiaries, ie: Yunnan
Realty Pte Ltd and Balestier Realty Pte Ltd for real
estate development activities. It also manages a
charitable institution known as The Hokkien
Foundation. This is to ensure that SHHK has
sufficient funds to promote education and social
welfare.
