The
Singapore Florist Association (SFA) was
established in 1974. Our members are mainly
florists, landscapers, wholesalers, distributors,
exporters, growers, floral design schools and
retailers of horticulture-related products. The SFA
is proud to have been awarded a Silver medal at the
recent 2011 Taipei International Flora Expo
(November 2010 to April 2011) for its participation
in the outdoor landscape display in the Global Area
Garden Competition. That was the first time that a
horticulture exhibition of such a big scale was held
in Taiwan. Twenty-two countries participated in the
competition. SFA is very honoured to win the Silver
Award for the Association and to spread Singapore’s
reputation as a Garden City.
The theme of our landscape display was “Steel City
Moving to New Horizons”. It depicted the need of
flowers and plants in our living environment. Our
association will also be participating in the World
Orchid Conference 2011 at Marina Bay Sands in
November 2011 in the landscape display competition.
This Conference was held in Singapore 65 years ago.
We will be using orchids and other natural materials
for the display.
Due to a shortage of space in land-scarce Singapore,
vertical wall gardens are getting more popular.
Besides adding beauty and colour to the walls, they
also help to cool down the buildings, thus saving
energy. What would be challenging is for us to go
forward and encourage Singaporeans to work in an
office with the environment of an outdoor garden.
Plants are important in our office environment as
they take in carbon dioxide and give out oxygen,
thus helping to reduce weariness and increase
productivity.
As we move into the future, the SFA will incorporate
and find new "green" ideas, ways and methods to
assist and sustain our natural environment and find
opportunities to promote ornamental plants to other
parts of the world. We hope that with the kind
assistance of the Agri-Food and Veterinary Authority
of Singapore (AVA), Singapore can look forward to
being a major exporter of ornamental plants
worldwide in the near future.
