Singapore Dragon & Lion Athletics Association is
founded in 1959. Main activities are dragon dance,
lion dance, flag dance and lastly wushu. But among
all these activities, lion dance group is only
formed 13 years later.
For DRAGON DANCE in SDLAA, we have created countless
innovative moves incorporated into the rythm of
dragon dance. This includes sitting and standing on
another person's shoulder while carrying the dragon
head in the 90s. Using props to enhance the dragon's
magnificent and forming pictorial-like patterns to
show certain "fengshui" drawing. All these
innovations have helped us to strive on for more
contributions to the circle and also bring out the
potential in everyone of us. In 1991, SDLAA took
part in the National Dragon & Lion Dance Competition
and achieved a Golden Dragon award. Thus this add up
to 3 times Golden Dragon achievement in 3
consecutive years(1986, 1988, 1991). Normally, a
dragon needs 9 person to perform, but as times goes
by, the number increase from 11, 17, 25, 49 where
the total length is about 75ft, 120ft, 160ft, 250ft
and 480ft respectively. Apart from these
achievements, we have discovered the wonders of
lightings, design and skills which helps to explore
man and physic relation.
Next is LION DANCE in SDLAA. Lion dance group is
formed in 1972. At beginning, we started with a
pairs of northern and southern lion. Not much focus
is put on the liondance group initially because of
the hectic involvements in the dragon dance
activities, thus the lion dance group then is yet
impressive as the dragon dance group. Therefore in
1978, SDLAA invites Ci Zong Hui's lion dance
instructor to do an exchange programme and SDLAA
send over our dragon dance instructor. But
improvement is still require for the lion dance
group. Finally in 1980, SDLAA invited the Lion Dance
Elder, Mr Liu Yao Bin, as our association's advisor.
From then with stringent training, our lion dance
group eventully leaped into a higher milestone of "Fatt
San" lion dance. Hence, our lion dance is being
appreciated by the circle and pushed to another
climax of "Fatt San" lion dance.
Throughout these years, SDLAA WUSHU has excelled in
its circle too. Many potential "fighter" are being
trained and excelled in their own perspect. "Shaolin
Wu Mei Pai" is the one and only SDLAA's Wushu. The
Wushu chief instructor then is our founder, Mr Ting
Ah Khong (passed away in 1999). With his dedicated
instructions, all disciples are nevertheless well
trained and won several honours to the association.
FLAG DANCE is one activity that started last (1986).
Initially those selected for flag dance are always
tall and muscular, this is to boost the image of the
warrior in the dynasty back then. In order to excel
in these area, we have invited one of Malaysia's (Ipoh)
association to advise on our skill and future
development. Therefore up till now, our flag dance
group has improved tremendously over the
performances.
With the above profile, SDLAA wish is to promote
this Chinese traditions to the world regardless of
nationality. Therefore we wish this tradition of
ours will always be burning in the hearts of
everyone.
