General Canned Goods, Sauces Company Profile: Becoming a dairy farmer was the last
thing Mr Ravindran would have ever thought of doing. When he
was younger, his classmate's father had a dairy farm, and he
did not even dare go near the cows! Nobody in his family had
careers remotely related to agriculture.
Besides,
his parents wanted him to become a lawyer. And yet,
today he is the manager and owner of Singapore's
very own Singapore Dairy Products Pte Ltd
enterprise!
The youngest child of five, Mr Ravindran grew up in
a cosy middle class family in Serangoon Gardens. He
attended school in the area and graduated from Maju
Secondary School (today's Broadrick Secondary
School) after completing his upper junior year.
After a couple of odd jobs, he signed on to the
police force during his national service. He had
fallen in love with the uniformed services during
his school days, and had no interest in becoming a
lawyer. It was a neat compromise between his and his
parents' aspirations. This ability to seek out
win-win solutions was to stand him in good stead
later in life.
Unfortunately, Mr Ravindran was too much of his own
man for a career in the police force. After a few
years, he resigned and dabbled in insurance before
starting his own trading business, importing
products from India and Sri Lanka for export to
China and Taiwan . He did so well that his bank
manger asked him to help turn around the loss-making
Vishnu Diary Farm (later renamed) in 1995! Mr
Ravindran is rather modest about his trading
success: "…the shipment just come here and goes
straight off, using Singapore as a stopover …. So
they were thinking, big amount of money was coming
into the bank and gong out the other way. So they
thought it was big business. Actually it was small
business; I was only earning a commission from both
sides."
He later agreed to take over the farm full time as
he felt it had some potential, the breakeven was
low, and it had synergy with his trading business.
That was when his headaches multiplied. However, his
solutions to these problems also show the
enterprising spirit he possesses.
His two biggest headaches are labour and cost. No
Singaporean would want to work on a dairy farm.
Besides importing labour from Malaysia, he is
exploring the possibility of employing inmates from
halfway houses and recovering mental patients. This
is also a way of discharging his social
responsibility. Besides that, he is also working to
get his farm certified as a training centre. As part
their training, the trainees will get hands-on
experience working on his farm!
In addition, the training fees will also help turn a
cost function into a revenue centre. As part of his
cost containment, he uses soya waste from a local
sauce factory to feed his cows, supplemented by wild
grass cut from the surrounding areas. The cow manure
is processed and sold as fertiliser. Mr Ravindran
jokes that he should get an environment grant for
recycling waste products! To break out of the
confines of the Singapore market, Mr Ravindran
recently setup another farm in Malaysia. He has also
revived the trading side of the business to boost
revenue.
Today, besides a stable milk business, Singapore
Dairy Products is also a tourist attraction. Loads
of children stream in for the unique experience of
seeing and touching real cows in urban Singapore. As
for the future, Mr Ravindran would like to become a
business consultant after he retires. His two
daughters (an accountancy graduate and a polytechnic
business student) currently handle the marketing.
Since they are not interested in running the farm,
he is inviting anybody who is interested to be
groomed as his successor.
