After graduating from medical school at the National University of Singapore in 1988, Brenda spent more than ten years practicing and teaching at the renowned KK Women’s and Children’s Hospital. Since 2005, she has been practicing at her own private clinic at Gleneagles Medical Centre, #03-01 Clinic for Women

She is a member of the Royal Australian College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists and a fellow of the Academy of Medicine, Singapore. She is also a member of the Asia-Pacific Menopause Federation and the Society of Colposcopy and Cervical Pathology.

As an experienced doctor who is easy to relate to, Dr Low provides a wide range of services for patients that come from all walks of life in Singapore, the region and places as far as Europe and the United States.

Our clinic provides comprehensive obstetrics and gynaecological care, including women’s health screening, infertility services, menopausal treatment, surgery and pregnancy care.

Gynaecological Services
Health screening for general health, cancers, fibroids, ovarian cysts, endometriosis and infections
For the health conscious women, tests including Pap smear to check for cancer of the cervix, ultrasound scan of the pelvis to check for tumours and cysts and blood tests for general health assessment are available. Mammogram is usually recommended for those above 40 years of age. Colposcopy (microscopic examination of the cervix) is also available if deemed necessary.

Inpatient and Outpatient Surgery including Laparoscopic and Hysteroscopic Surgery
Treatment for common gynaecological tumours like cysts and fibroids will depend on many factors including the symptoms and the nature of the tumour. If surgery is needed, it can be done either via laparoscopy ( small ‘key-hole’ incisions) or conventional open incisions.

Hysteroscopy is useful for the diagnosis and treatment of heavy or irregular periods. Tumours in the womb cavity can be removed via this method without abdominal incisions.

Urinary incontinence that results from menopause or childbirth can usually be corrected with day surgery sling procedures.

Childbirths and menopause can result in a lax vagina which may affect sex life. This may be re-fashioned surgically.

Pre-pregnancy Check-up and Contraceptive Advice
The ultimate goal of a couple planning to start a family is a healthy baby. Hence it is advisable to first get a health check and for the potential mother, to ensure that she is protected against infections like German measles and hepatitis B which can be transmitted to the unborn baby. Other tests are to detect common medical conditions like anaemia and thalassemia.

On the other hand, if you are looking to prevent or delay pregnancy, we have various forms of contraception (birth control) available including oral pills, injectables, condoms, IUCD (copper and Mirena) and implants. Emergency contraception has to be seen within 24 to 48 hours after intercourse for it to be effective.

Sterilization (tubal ligation) is performed by surgical division of the Fallopian tubes or by the application of clips. This procedure has to be done in the hospital and is a day surgery procedure.

Infertility Assessment and Treatment
Any couple who have been unsuccessful in trying to conceive after a year should seek consultation. During the first visit, a detailed history and physical examination will be carried out to try and determine the possible causes of the inability to conceive. At the same time, Pap smear, ultrasound scan and blood tests are performed and arrangement for a sperm test is made.

After the results of the tests are known, the next step may be to undergo laparoscopy which is usually done as a day surgery. This is an excellent tool which is important in the investigation of infertile couples. With this, it is possible to visualize the female reproductive organs and look for tubal blockage. Fibroids and cysts can also be removed at the same time. After finding the cause we can commence treatment. This is can be in the form of ultrasound follicular tracking and timing of intercourse or intra-uterine insemination. Assisted reproduction e.g. IVF if needed will be arranged.

Management of Menopausal Problems, including Osteoporosis ('brittle bones')
The menopause is characterized by the cessation of periods. In addition the patient may suffer from menopause symptoms like hot flushes, mood swings and vaginal dryness and in the long term complications of osteoporosis, which can lead to fractures.

Hormone replacement therapy (HRT) has been the main treatment for this condition. However, there are many other alternatives (without the risks of HRT) that can help women cope with their menopause.

Women should also be screened for osteoporosis using Xrays (BMD) to check for bone density. Various treatment for brittle bones are available.

Obstetrical Services
Antenatal care and delivery
Prenatal diagnosis including ultrasound and amniocentesis
We provide care for your pregnancy from the time of conception till delivery and postnatally. Antenatal and delivery packages are available. Tests like amniocentesis, nuchal fold translucency, detailed fetal scans ( 2-D and 3-D) ,and blood tests can be done to ascertain if the fetus has genetic or structural abnormalities.
