offers the national curriculum and the three mother tongue
languages -- Chinese, Malay & Tamil; has over 2,000 students
Situated
in Choa Chu Kang, the school started operations on 2
January 1994 at South View Primary School with 400
pupils in P1 to P4. When the school moved to its
present site in 1995, it had an enrolment of 1500
pupils in 44 classes from P1 to P5. The school was
officially opened by the then MP for Hong Kah North,
Dr John Chen, in June 1997.
Consider this amazing piece of knowledge – Some of
the most fascinating trees are the magnificent
Redwoods in America. They reach their leafy arms
heavenward, commonly growing 60 to 85 metres tall.
Some of the tallest can even reach up to heights of
110 metres and above. These trees stand like
sentinels of time and have done so for hundreds of
years. They've been through winds, earthquakes,
fires and storms – still they stand. Nothing seems
to deter them. What is so amazing is that these
trees, among the tallest in the world, have a
comparably shallow root system and yet they rarely
ever fall. How do they keep standing even in the
wildest of storms? It's because the Redwood's root
systems reach out for great distances and are
intertwined with one another. They literally hold
each up other up.
The world we live in is truly an amazing one. If we
open our eyes and our hearts to learn, we will not
be disappointed. What is even better than knowing a
piece of knowledge is discovering it yourself. The
sense of achievement and joy when the “aha! moment”
comes is immeasurable and the lesson stays with you.
You enjoy the experience so much that you will
eagerly want to begin your quest for another
discovery. When that happens, you have found your
momentum for learning.
However, what it will entail from the learner is to
have a spirit of inquiry and persistence in
learning. These are the qualities of a “Discoverer
Learner” – a learner who sees every learning
opportunity, even those that he is familiar with, as
an adventure. The Discoverer Learner anticipates
gems of knowledge to be uncovered and a deepening of
his understanding when he pursues his learning. The
Discoverer Learner is what we each hope to be and
will be our school’s theme for 2011. Our continuing
efforts in Problem-Based Learning (PBL), Programme
for Active Learning (PAL), Robotics integrated
lessons, ICT, 7 Habits and staff professional
learning communities have all been designed to
encourage self-directed learning and discovery. This
is because we see longer term gains for our pupils
and staff if we invest in building capacities for
learning.
