Lim Kim Hui is one of Singapore’s distinguished
ceramic artists. Lim was commissioned by the
Ministry of Information, Communications and the Arts
(MICA) for the Design and Production of Artworks for
presentation to Delegates at the Asia-Pacific
Economic Co-operation Summit 2009, Singapore.
A self-taught ceramic artist who didn’t have any
formal training, he travelled and researched in
Bizen, Karatsu, Tokoname, Akita and Shigaraki, in
Japan.
His illustrious career spans almost 30 years. He
trained and taught at Ming Village Ceramics,
Singapore. Then, mesmerized by Japanese pottery and
its rich traditions, he began to research and
develop on Japanese and the Southeast Asian styles
of pottery which eventually became an integral part
of his life and work. Lim’s works infuse naturalist
as well as a certain Japanese influence bearing
‘wabi-sabi, desu, ne’ aesthetics - restrained and
understated, subdued, and often seen in the beauty
of the unadornment and the naturalness of raw
materials, as well as the unpredictable temperament
of firing process.
Currently, he is the Master Potter at Ceramic House
Singapore and the Pottery Class of Japanese
Association, and teaches pottery at various schools
in Singapore. Those who love the smoked-glazed
pottery works that is likened to that of a Japanese
burnt wood feel, have come to associate with such
works produced at Ceramic House where pottery pieces
are fired at high temperatures of 1300 degrees
Celsius and above. This breakthrough was realized
quite ‘accidentally’ one day after his years of
research and experimental work at Ceramic House.
