We were
full time teachers who felt something had to be
added to the learning landscape. We wondered what it
was for a long time. We realised it was this:
students don’t just need to read, they need to
understand; they don’t just need to write, they need
to have something to say; they don’t just need to
remember – they need to know how to learn.
Our intention is to teach them all that, making them
eager, able learners in all disciplines, and across
many domains. Also, we want them to be natural at
it: it should be fun to satisfy your curiosity, to
discover how the world works, or to realise
something new.
Our Methods
We are a student-centred school, with small class
sizes, careful individual attention to our students,
and flexible lessons catered specifically to their
needs.
Our curriculum is constantly under review, to keep
current with the requirements of modern life and the
educational landscape.
We have a multiple intelligence approach to
learning, recognising that students learn and
develop in many different domains at once.
Our environment is positive, in which students are
encouraged to speak up and question everything:
there are no wrong answers in our classes, only the
need to ask more questions.
We start with reading: Reading is the foundation of
all types of learning, and reading good writing by
others, especially literary work, is the core which
we base our lessons on. It promotes excellent values
and develops cultural capital.
Next we focus on speaking and writing: no man is an
island, and success in life is often dictated by how
well we communicate with others. We encourage our
students to become effective and natural
communicators.
We also promote metacognition in our students: we
want them to be able to learn how to learn, because
the future is full of new material and concepts that
are constantly changing. Memorising is not the full
extent of learning, and we provide the support for
them to discover their own true learning ability.
