Sustainable Chemicals
Worldwide demand for detergent alcohols – essential
performance ingredients in consumer products such as
shampoos and laundry detergents – is currently $6
billion and expected to reach $8 billion by 2020.
Today’s detergent alcohols are produced from costly
and unsustainable palm kernel oil or petroleum.
Our CodeXol detergent alcohol products are being
developed to offer this global industry sustainable
and cost-effective alternatives, by replacing
petroleum and palm kernel oil with sustainable raw
materials from biomass.
Clean Fuels
The U.S. Dept. of Energy predicts that worldwide
demand for energy will rise by more than 50% by
2035. Demand for petroleum and other liquid fuels
will increase by 27 million barrels per day during
that time.
To address this global market, Codexis is developing
advanced liquid transportation fuels based on
non-food cellulosic feedstocks in partnership with
Shell, the world’s largest distributor of biofuels.
Codexis is also working with Ra?zen, Brazil’s
largest sugar and ethanol producer, to increase
ethanol yields.
Cost Effective Pharmaceutical Enzymes &
Intermediates
Codexis markets pharmaceutical enzymes and
intermediates to global pharmaceutical manufacturers
and is working with more than 50 pharmaceutical
companies worldwide. Codexis customers including
Merck and Pfizer use Codexis enzymes to speed
development processes, increase purity, lower
production costs and reduce toxic waste. In many
cases, our customers can avoid significant capital
expenditures required by alternative manufacturing
routes.
Renewable Bioindustrial Enzymes
High performance cellulase enzymes are in demand in
the fuels, chemicals and industrial products markets
for cost effective manufacturing of renewable
products from biomass. In 2011, Codexis announced
the first scale up of the company’s proprietary
cellulase enzymes at commercial scale. These enzymes
are used to convert non-food biomass to fermentable
sugars, which can ultimately be converted to
sustainable products including biofuels and
household goods.
